DEVELON Series 9 Excavators: Camera and Radar Safety Tech Moves From Warning to E-Stop

#News Center ·2026-11-03 00:00:00

Excavator safety is quietly moving from passive warning to active intervention, and DEVELON's Series 9 crawler excavator range is one of the clearest examples of that shift on the market today.

Stephane Dieu, product manager for DEVELON excavators in Europe, puts pedestrian interaction at the top of the risk list. "Collisions with pedestrians are generally the most dangerous accidents," he says in an interview with Aggregates Business. "Given the size and weight of these machines, the consequences are often critical and can be fatal."

Why cameras alone are not enough

Cab design has improved, but no operator can see every angle around a large, moving machine - especially along the right-hand side of an excavator, one of the most common blind spots. Cameras help, yet rain, dust and winter conditions can degrade the image exactly when visibility matters most.

That is why the industry is borrowing from automotive engineering, where blind-spot detection has evolved from a warning light into automatic braking. "There is real demand for systems that support the operator, because even the best operator cannot be fully concentrated for eight hours every day," Dieu says.

What the E-Stop system actually does

DEVELON's answer on the Series 9 range is a layered setup:

  • Six high-definition cameras create a combined 360-degree image, with software that distinguishes people from other objects.
  • Three radar sensors measure precise distance across 330 degrees around the machine, covering the principal blind-spot areas.
  • The E-Stop function intervenes when a hazard reaches a defined threshold, adding a final layer of protection when an alert alone would arrive too late.

Importantly for buyers comparing configurations, the Smart All-Around View Monitoring system, including people recognition, is standard on Series 9 excavators, while E-Stop remains an option that requires the additional radar sensors and software.

Tested on real sites, not just in the lab

DEVELON ran field trials with contractors and operators in France. The most encouraging feedback was that the system faded into the background during normal work. "After a week, the operator told us, 'I don't even think about it because it doesn't disturb the way I work. I can work as usual, but I know the machine is watching and will help me if necessary,'" Dieu reports. An external warning sound also makes the protection zone visible to ground crews in a way nothing else does.

The business case for buyers

A serious incident stops a project, damages equipment, triggers investigations and raises insurance exposure, while a strong safety record supports contractor prequalification. Dieu expects the market to follow the path already taken by 3D machine control: "Anti-collision systems will become a standard jobsite requirement within the next five to ten years," he predicts, adding that falling costs as volumes grow will push the technology into more machine classes.

For anyone shopping the used market, this distinction matters: check whether a machine carries the standard panoramic camera system, the optional radar-based E-Stop package, or neither, because the sensors and their calibration affect both price and the spare parts you will need to keep the system working. When comparing machines of the same model year, the safety package can be the difference between a machine that still meets tomorrow's site requirements and one that does not.
